Die Personalie
Mike Waufle wurde am 27. Juni 1954 in Hornell, New York, geboren und stand als aktiver Spieler für das Bakersfield College als Defensive End auf dem Feld. Anschließend wechselte er an die Universität von Utah State, wo er unter Coach Rod Marinelli (später unter anderem Head Coach der Detroit Lions) spielte. Seit 1979 steht Waufle als Coach an der Seitenlinie: 1979 startete er seine Trainerkarriere an der Alfred University, ehe er von 1980 bis 1984 wieder an seine Alma Mater Utah State zurückkehrte. Nach Stationen bei Fresno State, UCLA, Oregon State und der University of California wurde er 1998 von Jon Gruden in den Coaching Staff der Oakland Raiders berufen. Bis 2003 bekleidete Waufle bei den Raiders das Amt des Defensive Line-Coaches.
2004 folgte der Wechsel zu den New York Giants, wo er bis 2009 ebenfalls als D-Line-Coach fungierte. 2007 konnte er seinen größten Erfolg feiern, als die Giants die hochfavorisierten New England Patriots im Super Bowl XLII mit 17:14 besiegen konnten. Die Defensive Line war ein großer Faktor für den Erfolg seines Teams, deren Spieler Tom Brady in diesem Endspiel insgesamt fünf Mal sacken konnten. Hier lernte Waufle zudem Jim Herrmann kennen, der ab 2009 dort Linebacker-Coach war.
2010 kehrte er zu den Oakland Raiders zurück, wo er den Coaching-Staffs von Tom Cable und Hue Jackson angehörte. Jeff Fisher holte Waufle 2012 zu den St. Louis bzw. Los Angeles Rams, wo er bis 2016 Aaron Donald und Co. trainierte. In der Saison 2017 war Waufle im Staff von Coach Sean McDermott bei den Buffalo Bills engagiert. Nach einigen Jahren Pause möchte der 69-Jährige nun noch einmal ein neues Kapitel aufschlagen und seine Expertise bei den RAIDERS Tirol in der European League of Football zum Besten geben.

Mike Waufle was born on June 27, 1954 in Hornell, New York, and was an active player for Bakersfield College as a defensive end. He then transferred to Utah State University, where he played under coach Rod Marinelli (later head coach of the Detroit Lions). Waufle has been on the sidelines as a coach since 1979: he began his coaching career at Alfred University in 1979 before returning to his alma mater Utah State from 1980 to 1984. After stints at Fresno State, UCLA, Oregon State and the University of California, he was appointed to the coaching staff of the Oakland Raiders by Jon Gruden in 1998. Waufle held the position of defensive line coach with the Raiders until 2003.
In 2004, he joined the New York Giants, where he also served as D-line coach until 2009. In 2007, he celebrated his greatest success when the Giants defeated the highly-favored New England Patriots 17-14 in Super Bowl XLII. The defensive line was a big factor in his team’s success, with players sacking Tom Brady a total of five times in that final game. This is also where Waufle met Jim Herrmann, who was linebackers coach there from 2009.
In 2010, he returned to the Oakland Raiders, where he was part of the coaching staffs of Tom Cable and Hue Jackson. Jeff Fisher brought Waufle to the St. Louis and Los Angeles Rams in 2012, where he coached Aaron Donald among others until 2016. In the 2017 season, Waufle was part of coach Sean McDermott’s staff at the Buffalo Bills. Now the 69-year-old wants to open a new chapter and put his expertise to the test with the RAIDERS Tirol in the European League of Football.
